About Christmas

In many countries, Christmas is one of the most important and popular holidays celebrated throughout the year. Christmas is a holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is also known as the "Son of God" in Christianity.

Although there are multiple interpretations, the traditional narrative behind the Christmas celebration is that Jesus' parents, Joseph and Mary, arrived in the city of Bethlehem, but had no place to live. They were confined to the stables of an inn, where Jesus was born. This traditional narrative is known as the Nativity of Jesus.

Children are valued at Christmas as they receive gifts from their parents and the famous Santa Claus, who has gained mythical status over the years, children celebrate with enthusiasm, they are told that he will bring them gifts from Chimneys down and put them right under the Christmas tree on Christmas night. Here are some facts about Christmas.

1) Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. For most people, it happens every year on December 25th - the day the Roman Catholic Church chooses to commemorate Jesus' birthday. But, in fact, no one really knows the exact date of Jesus' birth!

2) When Christmas comes, people all over the world enjoy all kinds of joyful fun! Many of the festive traditions we have in the UK today have Victorian roots - such as Christmas cards, gift-giving and biscuits, as well as traditional foods like mince pies and roast turkey! In fact, Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert are big fans of Christmas!

3) Christmas trees were also very popular in Victorian England. But these first appeared in 16th-century Germany, where people decorated fir trees with fruit and nuts at Christmas — and later candies, paper shapes, and candles. Surprisingly, historians believe the origins of this holiday tradition may be traced back to the Romans and ancient Egyptians, who used evergreen plants and garlands as symbols of immortality.

4) We can't talk about Christmas without mentioning the bearded, ruddy happy man...Santa! But have you ever wondered how he got the name Santa? It comes from Sinterklaas, which means Saint Nicholas in Dutch. St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop who lived in the 4th century AD - known for his kindness and generosity, he later became the patron saint of children.

5) Now, is it weird to imagine if there is no Christmas? Believe it or not, Christmas celebrations in 1644 were illegal in England, and soon after, in the British colonies of America! At the time, members of the government believed that the religious significance of Christmas had been forgotten, and the festive celebration was banned. However, some are still celebrating in secret until Christmas is legal again... almost 20 years later!
